” What’s a draft?” My daughter asked me.
Well, it’s a piece of work that is finished, but also not finished. It’s a complete version, ready for edits, ready for the next step.
“So it’s not actually done?”
In the case of my book, no, it’s not actually done. But it’s getting ready to being done. It’s like a new house. It has everything it needs– running water, a kitchen, bedrooms, a roof… but it’s not a home yet. I need to move into it a bit more, spread out, fill the bathtub with bubbles, build a cozy fire in the fireplace, celebrate Christmas, bake birthday cakes in the oven, snuggle on the couch with a cat, make coffee, fall asleep reading books in bed, open the windows to fill the dining room with sunlight and a spring breeze, plant geraniums and snap peas in the garden, make messes, clean up messes, fill it with love and life and candles.
My book is a house. Shining. New. It is a complete draft.
I am working every day at draft number 2. I am filling in the details. I am trying to make this house a home.
