I have one goal for this year: paint more.
It often feels so hard to just sit down and paint unless I have a commissioned project; an assignment of sorts. So I have been trying with a good amount of effort and luck to sit down several days a week and just paint what I feel like painting. I have forced myself to make it a part of my scheduled life, which for the most part has worked out pretty well. It has been exciting and darn right intoxicating for me to work quickly and spontaneously doing several small paintings a month, focusing on color and light through studies of sea life, birds, and even landscapes (shocking!). As a trained natural science illustrator I am used to working on a very tiny scale, focusing deeply on details and acute accuracy, so playing with large swaths of paint on a palette knife feels a bit liberating.
With all of this artwork spilling from my studio I have started selling quite a few pieces, which is just the most incredible feeling ever. It really fills me with so much joy to know that my artwork is living a life outside of my own home. I never really expect my artwork to speak to anyone in particular (I mean, I hope it does), but every time it resonates with someone I feel as though I’ve stepped into a pool of sunshine; so often in my artistic career it has felt as though I have been creating into a black hole, some sort of vacuum, and to make a connection is absolutely life giving.
I have been adding lots of new things to my website portfolio. Fish! Birds! Landscapes! Insects! And I now have a section for artwork that is for sale. Check it out!
As always, Thanks for your support.
